It Just So Happened is the story of how, against all odds, Darrick Lareva came through a series of amazing miracles to survive a horrendous car accident on the way home from Bible college for Christmas break. You will cry, and also rejoice, as you read through the narrative of miracles that occurred during his recovery. Here is an example: His mother needed to make many phone calls. She bought a prepaid calling card, but before she could use it, someone gave her one. Then someone gave her another and another and another. She never did use her calling card while she was in the hospital with Darrick.

This story is unusual but true--as told by eyewitnesses or by those whose lives overlapped those eyewitnesses. The story is about the lives of four generations of ancestors beginning in old Europe and then coming to America in the 1800s with a wave of other immigrants. They moved westward, lured by the promises of homesteads. They became the last of the pioneers as they reached the wilderness frontiers of Canada in the far West. They had been held back by the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression but then escaped to something better in California. These family lines were linked by a trusted belief system that informed them and gave them hope. There was an unpredictable series of good things and bad things that happened to them on a daily basis. Their Christian worldview and trust in God saw them through these many struggles. Keith E. Andersen was born in Alberta, Canada, in 1932. He graduated from high school in Kelseyville, California, in 1949. He then served four years in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1954. He graduated from San Francisco State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Masters Degree, together with teaching and school administration credentials. He taught in the public schools for five years before serving as school principle for thirteen years. He served as Assistant Superintendent until retiring in 1990. He served for more than thirty years in public education. The author has served in his local church for over fifty years as adult Bible teacher, elder, deacon, and other roles. He is active in the distribution of bibles through Gideons International. The author and his wife of 58 years live in Napa, California and have four adult children and six grandchildren.

A woman with three loves and a son with three fathers: a universal story of passion and personal destiny by the award-winning author of A Pigeon and a Boy. When the mysterious Judith arrives in a small agricultural village in Palestine in the 1930s, she attracts attention of three men: Moshe, a widowed farmer; Globerman, a wealthy cattle dealer; and Jacob, who loses his wife—the most beautiful woman in the village—because of his obsession with Judith, who insists on living in a cowshed rather than settling down with any of her admirers. When she gives birth to Zayde, all three suitors consider him their son, and Zayde, who tragically loses Judith, imbibes their triple wisdom and their distinct versions of his origins. As Zayde pieces together the beguiling story of the singular woman who was his mother, Meir Shalev weaves a magical novel of the joys and secrets of village life, of an unconventional family, and the unexpected fruits of love.

Nobody ever reads this part of the book. Somebody at the publishing house explained to me that it's actually called the book flap. That sounded dirty, so I giggled for three hours. But it says in my contract that I have to write something over here in this tiny space, even though I don't think anyone will notice. Some people might open up to the middle of the book and start flipping through pages, but nobody will read this part. In fact, I'll bet anything that you're not reading this part now. And if it turns out that you are . . . well, the guy in the bookstore is probably staring at you, saying, "Stop reading that book!" I guess there's a reason bookstores are going out of business, left and right. Cheap fucks like you think it's okay to stand in the aisles and read to your heart's content. So for the sake of bookstores everywhere, buy this fucking book. I myself don't care. I only care about the poor working man. Oh, and the sanctity of the written word. I care about that, too. And in my case, those written words, of course, include fuck, dick, and pussy.

A thorough exegetical and homiletical analysis of each passage of Judges and Ruth This masterly commentary sheds exegetical and theological light on the books of Judges and Ruth for contemporary preachers and students of Scripture. Listening closely to the text while interacting with the best of scholarship, Chisholm shows what the text meant for ancient Israel and what it means for us today. In addition to its perceptive comments on the biblical text, it examines a host of themes such as covenants and the sovereignty of God in Judges, and providence, redemption, lovingkindness, and Christological typology in Ruth. In his introduction to Judges, Chisholm asks and answers some difficult questions: What is the point of Judges? What role did individual judges play? What part did female characters play? Did Judges have a political agenda? Chisholm offers astute guidance to preachers and teachers wanting to do a series on Judges or Ruth by providing insightful exegetical and theological commentary. He offers homiletical trajectories for each passage to show how historical narrative can be presented in the pulpit and classroom.

When the Civil War halted steamboat travel on the Mississippi River in 1861, an unemployed riverboat pilot named Samuel Clemens enlisted in the Missouri militia. After two weeks of service, Clemens abandoned his post and fled westward to begin a writing careerÑa turn of events that precipitated the rise to fame of the man who would become known as Mark Twain. The circumstances surrounding his departure are unclear; some view Twain as a deserter, while others call into question the nature of his commitment from the beginning. Twain defended himself in speeches and in print, offering varying accountsÑwith varying degrees of truthÑof his confusion upon enrollment, his ignorance of the moral and political forces behind the war, and his claim to have killed a man while hiding in a corncrib. Regardless of the reason for his desertion, his personal experiences and the Civil War in general are recurring topics in TwainÕs speeches, fiction, and nonfiction. In addition to broaching the issue in longer works, such as Life on the Mississippi and The Gilded Age, Twain directly addresses it in shorter pieces such as ÒThe Private History of a Campaign That FailedÓ and ÒA Curious Experience.Ó Editor David Rachels unites these selections in Mark TwainÕs Civil War, offering Twain fans and Civil War scholars the unprecedented opportunity to read the entire array of TwainÕs Civil War-influenced literature in one volume. In addition to TwainÕs own pieces, Rachels includes an account of TwainÕs war career by his official biographer as well as a story by Absalom C. Grimes, a Confederate mail runner who claims to have served with Twain early in the war. An introduction by Rachels completes the text, which analyzes TwainÕs military stint and assesses the warÕs profound influence on one of AmericaÕs most celebrated authors.

In 1942, the federal government expelled more than 22,000 Japanese Canadians from their homes in British Columbia. From 1942 to 1949, they were dispossessed, sent to incarceration sites, and dispersed across Canada. Over 4,000 were deported to Japan. Cartographies of Violence analyses the effects of these processes for some Japanese Canadian women. Using critical race, feminist, anti-colonial, and cultural geographic theory, Mona Oikawa deconstructs prevalent images, stereotypes, and language used to describe the 'Internment' in ways that masks its inherent violence. Through interviews with women survivors and their daughters, Oikawa analyses recurring themes of racism and resistance, as well as the struggle to communicate what happened. Disturbing and provocative, Cartographies of Violence explores women's memories in order to map the effects of forced displacements, incarcerations, and the separations of family, friends, and communities.

Wrestling is as much a part of winter in Iowa as is snow and cold. Dreams of state championships begin in elementary school and, since 1972, come to fruition—or heartbreakingly fall short—at an arena in Des Moines in February or March. The tournament finals sell out, and individuals and teams carve their names on the sport’s history tree each year. Some champions were deaf, some were amputees, but all earn the respect of thousands for their work ethic—a hallmark of the state’s populace. Is this heaven? No, it’s better than that. It’s high school wrestling in Iowa!

A number of years ago now as one of my grandson’s first birthday approached I thought about what to give a one year old. There are a million things that will be played with for a short while then either broken or ignored. I wanted to give something special, something lasting, something that even when older he might still enjoy. Then it struck me, since he likes the silly little stories I tell him upon his request, that maybe I could write some cute little short stories, with a moral as well, just for him (and any of my other grandchildren as well when shared). That’s all it took to get me started. Since then each year I write a little story that somehow relates to something in his life. When another grandchild came along he also was added to the list of recipients of original stories. When I got to thinking about it I decided there may be other grandparents that would like to spend time with their grandchild reading a little story. Now a few years down the pike and I have enough for a book. And so herein I offer my readers a chance to share the joy of time spent reading to a child. That is why my stories were written in the first place. Children go through phases as with my grandchildren there were the dinosaurs, whales, (especially the blue whale), hedge hogs, puppies and gold fish. I’m sure you get my drift. All of these fed my imagination and help to produce stories that have a connection and personal touch for both the child and me. These stories are not written for children to read, but rather for a loving adult to sit down with child on their lap or side by side on a shared sofa and be read to. I recommend using funny voices and lots of emphasis and maybe a tickle or two at just the right moment to add flavor and a garnish to each story. The giggles, like sparklers on the 4th of July, will shower joy in all directions and warm the heart of the one reading the story and those close by. Do not be concerned about the content all the stories contained in this book are rated PG - (to be read by Parent or Grandparent). I hope you will enjoy these short stories even more that I did writing them.
