The Pocket Book is for use by doctors, nurses and other health workers who are responsible for the care of young children at the first level referral hospitals. This second edition is based on evidence from several WHO updated and published clinical guidelines. It is for use in both inpatient and outpatient care in small hospitals with basic laboratory facilities and essential medicines. In some settings, these guidelines can be used in any facilities where sick children are admitted for inpatient care. The Pocket Book is one of a series of documents and tools that support the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI). The guidelines require the hospital to have (1) the capacity to carry out certain essential investigations, such as pulse oximetry, blood glucose, blood smear examinations for malaria parasites, estimation of haemoglobin, packed cell volume and full blood count, blood group and cross-match, and basic microscopy of cerebrospinal fluid and urine; and where possible blood and urine culture, ultrasound and basic x-rays; (2) essential medicines for the care of seriously ill children. Advanced and high care treatment options, such as intensive care or mechanical ventilation, are not described. These guidelines focus on the management of the major causes of childhood mortality in most developing countries, such as newborn problems, pneumonia, diarrhoea, malaria, meningitis, septicaemia, measles and related conditions, severe acute malnutrition and paediatric HIV/AIDS. It also covers some common surgical conditions that can be managed in small hospitals. Details of the evidence on which the Pocket Book is based can be found onWHO website from the published guidelines provided in the bibliography. These guidelines are applicable in most areas of the world and may be adapted to suit country specific circumstances.

Highly Commended, BMA Medical Book Awards 2014 The fifth edition of this highly successful and well-regarded book continues to provide those working in neonatal intensive care units with precise instructions on the diagnosis and management of common neonatal problems. This edition has been extensively updated and revised, while retaining the background physiology, key references, and diagrams that made previous editions so successful. Several new chapters have been added, including the subjects of fetal medicine, antenatal diagnosis, and obstetrics for the neonatologist. Using a clear, accessible style, this edition features discussions of evidence-based medicine and the introduction of additional easy-to-digest lists. The text has been made more internationally applicable, including a re-focus of the chapter on organization of neonatal care away from UK-specific admission criteria and more towards general reasons for admitting a baby to the intensive care ward. A Manual for Neonatal Intensive Care provides invaluable guidance for trainees in pediatrics, neonatology, and neonatal nursing and forms a useful ready-reference for the practicing pediatrician and nurse.

This title is directed primarily towards health care professionals outside of the United States. Neonatology is a sub-speciality of paediatrics devoted to the care of the newborn infant. The wider care of the newborn infant includes not only the sick neonate but also the well newborn infant. The practice of neonatology is generally limited to specialist neonatal units and nurseries – ranging from those nurseries that deal with the well newborn infant to neonatal intensive care units. The care of the newborn infant is delivered by full time neonatologists, visiting medical officer neonatologists, paediatric registrars, senior house officers, nurses holding neonatal certificates, midwives and JMO’s. The book has been specifically written, formatted and designed to be carried whilst on duty, and contains information that staff in neonatal units will need during the course of their day – especially that information required often, but not yet committed to memory. This information requires continual reinforcement and in a busy unit there is no time to consult other references such as textbooks or computer based information. Portable clinical reference Covers procedures such as peripheral IV, umbilical arterial and venous catheter insertion, central venous line insertion and peripheral IA line insertion Coverage of standard infusions of dopamine, dobutamine, morphine and midazolam, insulin and PGE1 Ready Reckoner table, by infant birthweight, for size of ETTs and umbilical lines (usage and insertion), and common drug and infusion dosages Resuscitation and infection algorithms included
